Why a new regulation?
The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that more than 2 million American workers are exposed every year to Respirable Crystalline Silica. "Materials like sand, stone, concrete, and mortar contain crystalline silica." Construction workers are particularly exposed to silica dust and over 900 of them are diagnosed with silicosis every year. Silicosis is an incurable and debilitating work related injury that kills over 600 Americans every year; and yet it can be prevented. In 2016, OSHA put in place a new regulation with the goal of protecting operators exposed to Silica. The first enforcement of this regulation started September 23, 2017 with the Occupational Exposure to Respirable Crystalline Silica standard §1926.1153 for Construction.
